Winter Gathering Every year we co-host a one day Winter Gathering at the home of a workshop
alum. It offers a chance for folks to get to meet other draft horse folks
in their area and get some help accomplishing a task or learning more
about an aspect of their operation on their 'home turf'. If you are interested
in hosting a Winter Gathering, please let us know. The 2010 Winter Gathering will be held on February 6 at the
Raven Hill Farm in Caanan, NH with hosts Julie Clemmons and Jonathan Garthwaite.. For more info, directions
and to RSVP, please call Julie: 603-523-7007. We will be working with her
Suffolk mare doing some woods work and hooking a horse in shafts for the first time. The day
will get started around 10 am. There will also be a team on a scoot and a Piggyback Firewood Arch will be available to use and try. Lunch will be a potluck style meal with lots of time for visiting,
catching up with friends and meeting new folks. After lunch we'll get
back at it. Please bring a potluck lunch item and a donation for the "hat" to cover expenses.
saturday will feature a variety of activities focused on farming and logging with Suffolk horses. Depending on the weather, horses will be cutting, tedding, raking and picking up loose hay, discing, plowing & cultivating, skidding logs, giving wagon rides and more. There will be horse training and hoof trimming demonstration & discussions. There will be some driving activities geared toward young teamsters. This low key, non-competitive event is a great way to see draft horses in action. You can watch, help, ask questions of teamsters from a varity of backgrounds and experience levels. There will also be a "Test Drive A Suffolk" activity, in which any interested individuals can take the lines and practice their driving skills.
Family style meals are available. Tent camping is welcome. Arrival Friday evening is welcome.
